The nanays were resistant on the first day, claiming they had no business trying to make art. At the end of the week, they wrote a thank you letter saying, “...it’s the best experience we ever had, before we thought that mothers are just only for taking care of their babies and family, pero hindi po pala. You taught us how to express our feelings through painting, making different kinds of art, expressing what’s inside of us and we did it. We are so proud of our art, we will be sure to show these to our friends and family.”
I feel proud because I didn’t think I could make art. I also feel sorrow because this represents the time the rains washed away everything we had in Ulingan.
On the last page is a mermaid. She is sad because she can never leave the water. Yet she is also happy because at least she can feel the sun.
